What Lawn Care Costs and What Moves the Price

What lawn care costs

Lawn care is priced per visit or per season, and the typical range depends on lot size, how often we come and which services the plan takes in.

Mowing is the visit most owners put a number on first. In Providence a cut typically runs $35 to $116, with a small, open front yard toward the bottom of that spread and a big or awkward lot toward the top.

Feeding, weed control, aeration and the cleanups sit on top of the mowing, and a season program bundles them together. Next to the rest of yard work, a mowing plan or a mulch refresh costs little; a redesign or a hardscape build costs a good deal more.

Those are typical figures for the city, not our quote. Yours comes after we have seen the lawn, and the estimate is free.

What sets the price

Lot size, turf condition, slope, shade, access, drainage, bed area and visit frequency all shape a plan and its price.

This is what we look at on the walk-round, one line each.

  • Lot sizeMore turf means more passes, more trimming and more hours on the property.
  • Turf conditionThin, weedy grass or a heavy "thatch" layer needs work a healthy lawn skips.
  • SlopeA steep bank is slower to cut and leans harder on "string trimming".
  • ShadeGrass under trees grows on its own clock, which changes how often it needs cutting and feeding.
  • AccessWide open turf suits "zero-turn mowers"; a narrow side gate means a walk-behind and more time.
  • DrainageSoggy low spots slow every visit and shape what the plan has to fix.
  • Bed areaBeds add edging, weeding and mulch, and bed edging is priced by the linear foot.
  • Visit frequencyWeekly, every other week or as needed, set by the grass, the shade, the slope and how sharp you want the yard.

Per-visit prices and season contracts

One-time and weekly items are priced per visit, while full programs are usually quoted as annual contracts billed in level monthly amounts.

Paid by the visit

A single cleanup, an aeration or a weekly mow, each with its own figure. You pay for the work done that day, which suits a yard that needs one job, or an owner who wants to see how we work first.

One plan for the whole year

A season program

Mowing, feeding, weed control and the spring and fall cleanups written into one agreement. The total is spread evenly across the months, so a busy spring does not arrive as a heavy bill.

Comparing lawn care quotes

Quotes should be compared on a written scope, with the weekly items listed apart from the seasonal ones, and a rate far above or far below the rest should make you wary.

A quote that rolls the whole season into one line hides what each visit costs. Once the mowing, trimming and edging sit on one list and the "core aeration", "overseeding" and fall cleanup sit on another, two proposals line up item by item.

A rate well under the others deserves a question about what it leaves out, and one well over them should say what it adds.

Before you sign, check that the quote:

  • is written down, with the scope spelled out
  • lists weekly or one-time work apart from seasonal work
  • comes from a provider who is licensed and insured
  • sits in line with the other quotes you have

That is how we write ours: the whole job quoted before we start, and nothing added after.

Prices by service

Each service's price follows its own factors, set out on that service's page. The short answers to the questions we hear most are below.

Mowing price per visit

Mowing is priced per visit by lot size and how often the lawn is cut. Weekly and biweekly schedules each carry their own rate for a single cut.

Sod price factors

Sod is priced by lawn size, grass type and the soil preparation the site needs. We price each new lawn by its area, and on a very large, flat yard with no deadline, seed costs less than "sod".

Routine care versus renovation

Routine inspections and scheduled maintenance catch small problems before they turn into costly renovations. A thin patch found in spring is a reseeding job; the same patch left for seasons ends with the lawn stripped and laid again.

Neighbors on the price and the work

Our Google reviews from owners around Providence, in their own words.

William has been taking care of our yard since the spring, and we couldn’t be happier. What began as a simple spring clean-up has turned into ongoing lawn and yard maintenance. He’s incredibly dependable, does meticulous work, and is an absolute pleasure to work with — not to mention very reasonably priced. I highly recommend him to anyone looking for a reliable and detail-oriented landscaper in the area.

William was very professional from the start with clear communication and pricing. He removed 4 large, old shrubs and trimmed others, cleaned up the beds and edged the area. He also took away all the yard waste and left the area clean. Pleasant to work with; highly recommended
